Heinen Landscape recently worked with a Brookside area customer in Kansas City to transform a worn and outdated patio area into a new and engaging centerpiece for outdoor entertainment. The project included a new paver patio with contrasting border, new shrubs, flowers and other plantings, fresh mulch along the border fencing of the backyard, new sod in many areas, and a reconditioned irrigation system with specific watering zones designed to give just the right amount of water to the individual plant, trees and lawn areas within each zone.
After working with the residents to create a plan for their backyard makeover, the Heinen team went to work removing the existing patio – which was actually two layers of old patio. The top layer was a grid of epoxy-pebble-stones laid within a grid of rotted wood borders. Once the Heinen jackhammer crew started work on the epoxy pebble layer they discovered another two inches of decomposed concrete patio below!
Once the demolition was complete, and the debris hauled away for recycling, it was time to grade and lay a foundation for beautiful new concrete pavers with the look of natural stone. Unlike the large square grid of the former patio, the new patio uses smaller pavers which gives the visual illusion of an even larger surface area.
While the Heinen hardscape crew worked on the new patio, Heinen’s landscape crew went to work on planting medium-sized evergreen plants in front of a rear property-line iron fence to provide privacy for the new entertainment areas. The Heinen Landscape crew also professionally designed and installed a ring of flowering shrubs, perennial flowers, small trees and other planting around the backyard perimeter creating a landscape feature that will bloom beautifully during the spring and summer seasons for years to come!
